MAKING PANTALOONS COOL AGAIN
by Oliver Anderson
What's Up Magazine

A delectable duo? Perhaps a formidable fraternal fellowship? Alliteration aside, countless childhood years spent in musical experimentation have produced Los Fancyladz, a brotherly hip-hop bond between Tony and Julian Gavilanes.

Frankly, there's so much to be said about their first full-length album, "The Audio Circus," and so little room to write about it. The brothers Gavilanes have taken a unique approach to the game of hip-hop, incorporating bizarre samples, multicultural flavor, and hauntingly electronic melodies. From songs exploring their Latin roots such as "Dia de los Muertos," to electronic dreamscapes like those found on "War of the Universe", their sound is not easily definable.

Overpowering, and damn near overshadowing their polyphonic journey is the depth of their lyrical abilities and flow skills. You won't be finding any Louis Vuitton, tricked-out rides, or fat chains in the lyrical resume of Los Fancyladz.

Quite contrary to the normal trappings of hip-hop, Los Fancyladz stray from the bravado and misogyny to produce incredibly thoughtful lyrics. Cuts like "Manifest Destiny" and "Civil Rights" take multiple perspectives on real historical events in our country. While their style is anything but typical, Los Fancyladz aren't afraid to touch topics like love and lust. Utterly unapologetic about their sexual urges, they pine for love and preach against the tired "pimp playa" lifestyle in songs like "Freak."

All around, "The Audio Circus" is an enthralling excursion into the future of indie hip-hop. Divorcing from the sorry state of the rap game, look to Los Fancyladz to incite the local revolution.
